Sahali takes its name from the Chinook Jargon word for up or above, and it sits on the bench at 500 to 700 metres elevation between downtown and Aberdeen, overlooking the Thompson valley. It grew from 8,180 people in 1986 to 12,807 in 2021, and holds Thompson Rivers University and most of the city's big-box and grocery retail. Lower Sahali is older split-levels and townhouses from the first wave of building; Upper Sahali is later two-storey homes on steeper lots.
The elevation means Sahali runs a degree or two colder than the river flats in winter and gets the wind, so a split-level with an uninsulated garage ceiling under the bedrooms or an open rim joist over the crawl space is the usual cold-room complaint. Renovations that open walls for new windows are a chance to foam the cavity while it is exposed, quoted by the wall.
